Firefly for Syrians
Firefly has provided essential education opportunities to war affected Syrian children since 2016. Firefly started working with Syrian refugee teachers, creating an education centre in Antakya, Turkey where many families had fled civil war. In February 2023 Antakya was devastated by an earthquake, a new centre has been set up on the edge of the city, close to where most Syrian families are now living, in temporary accommodation. The Firefly team in Antakya manages teaching in both southern Turkey and in the Turkish safe zone in northern Syria. We directly reach over 2500 children per month, providing daily pre-school education and weekly science, maths & Arabic classes. Our online lessons receive over 360,000 views per month significantly amplifying our impact in regions where we cant teach face to face.
Firefly for Syrian’s work
Offering programmes around Antakya and outreach work into northern Syria Firefly reaches over 2500 children each month. Firefly’s team has developed unique meccano-like resources used to teach practical science and maths activities in Syrian refugee centres in southern Turkey and in northern Syria. In addition they offer an accelerated learning programme in northern Syria for children who have fallen behind. The teachers they train and mentor are plugging the gap in lost school years due to war and earthquake. They are supporting children emotionally and educationally, helping them to build better futures.

2023 Earthquake
The devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria in February 2023, caused massive loss of life, destruction and heartbreak for the children Firefly teaches and their families. Since the earthquake Firefly has been re-establishing it’s activities. This has involved extensive psycho-social support for staff and children, developing learning resources and adapting the curriculum to meet a new set of needs. Staff training is ongoing in both southern Turkey and northern Syria where Firefly has been working in close collaboration with the Turkish Red Crescent.
