Firefly is a small #charity that supports children impacted by war in the #MiddleEast and #Bosnia. I’ve been a trustee with Firefly since 2015 and it was a real joy to visit the Syrian centre and see the incredibly inspiring work the team of 10 Syrian teachers are doing to help hundreds of young refugee children in both #Turkey and in #Syria.
Most Syrian #children have fallen behind in their education because of the war and displacement. Firefly’s centre is helping to ensure Syrian children born during the war don’t become a ‘lost generation’.
The centre provides top up education in #Arabic language, #maths and #science, helping the children to catch up on their lost years of schooling. Over many months, the local team has developed a tailor-made innovative curriculum and set of resources (including some amazing model sets – pictured here) to address the needs of young Syrian refugee children.
Firefly’s centre is completely run by a #local team of Syrian refugee #teachers. In addition to funding the centre, Firefly’s UK team (a tiny team of 3 who are mostly #volunteers and supported by 7 #trustees and various other volunteers) helps with #monitoring and #evaluation and empowering the local Syrian team.
Firefly’s Syrian centre is one of the most effective and best value for money #NGOs I’ve seen. The local team want to expand to reach more children in Syria and Turkey and they would welcome support and fundraising. If you’d like to get involved or want to know more, please drop me a message!
